About Me: I'm a Nintendo fan at heart, but I'll try anything that's good. I'll play any genre, from browser-based tower defense games to the most hardcore shoot-em-ups to a triple-A FPS and back to good ol' Mario. I'm also one of those RPG snobs that thinks Final Fantasy VII only gets so much love because so many people didn't play the ones that came before. I hardly do any online gaming with random people because they're almost all losers and jerks. I dearly love playing co-op ANYTHING with my friends, though.
Interests: Husker football, movies, Legos... nerd stuff, basically. But as you'll see looking at my profile, I'm clearly not interested in video games at all.

Vehicular Man-severely-injure-but-NOT-slaughter
Did you like the previous Batman: Arkham *insert noun* games? Well then you can probably guess how you’ll feel about this one. Rocksteady’s magnum opus for the Caped Crusader does a good job of not fixing what isn’t broke, and also managing to find one or two new things in the Batman universe it hasn’t wrung for nostalgia to throw into a game. Full disclosure: I’ve played Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, but NOT Arkham Origins (made by a different developer than the other Arkham games), so when I reference “the other games” I speak only to those two games. Apparently, so does Rocksteady, who considers this game the end of a “trilogy”. (I am going to do a little spoiling here and there to set the stage for you, so …

Magicka Review comment
Didn't even know about controller support. I don't know if I even had the Xbox controller adapter for my PC when we played. Honestly, I think I still would have played with a keyboard if the other option is selecting elements with a thumbstick. It might be more visual (and less prone to mistakes?) but sounds way slower. I'm curious how it works for you.
The Gauntlet remake that came out last year on Steam had a similar playstyle for the Wizard (using an Xbox controller) that I really enjoyed, specifically because I had so much fun on Magicka. But it was slimmed down quite a bit.

Magicka Review comment
It's disappointing that you didn't even mention that the game includes native Xinput (read: Xbox) controller support. This review had be terrified, as Magicka is up next on our online coop list. I had no idea how I was going to map that cluster-eff control scheme you described with Xpadder, but it turns out I won't have to!

How can a Japanese game be made in Texas and a Western game be made in Japan? If you want to argue that "J" and "W" are styles and not just ignorant regional elitism, I don't know what to tell you.

To answer your question, yes I did play on a new 3ds. I thought the camera was a nice touch. The c-stick wasn't as sensitive as I would have liked, but it still did its job.

And I know I've shared these before, but the RPG-haters at Extra Credits did a three-part video series about the differences between WRPGs and JRPGs. They don't think the W and J set them apart ENOUGH, and should be separated even more distinctly.

Oh, and since it's basically the source for all video game news right now, I present the JRPG reddit page. Filled with RPG haters, I'm sure.

It helps if you realize it's not a gaming "slur" - for lack of a better word.
IGN, Gamespot, Game Informer... all used the term within the first PARAGRAPH of their overwhelmingly glowing reviews of Bravely Default, no one giving it less than an 8.0. RPG-haters, then?
On MetaCritic, the first five reviews listed (and as a result, five of the highest reviews given) all use it somewhere in the body of the review. RPG-haters, I assume?
Gamespot circled back around to give BD their 3DS Game of the Year award, and called it a JRPG AGAIN. That's a weird thing to do if you hate RPGs.
Regardless of how you feel about those sites personally, the amount of influence they have on customers and the industry is not debatable, and they all seem fine with JRPGs.
So, to answer address your comment, your interpretation of JRPG is a construct of your imagination (and the increasingly curious habit of letting a section of message board idiots really get to you... and honestly, it doesn't even sound as though you enjoy a lot of the time you spend on message boards) while you completely ignore the LOUDEST voices in the industry. I don't do that (I've largely given up on the random-people message board thing for anything but very specific conversations, because I found myself really not enjoying it... so I quit) so I guess I see things differently.
I can see thick, black disdain dripping down my screen every time you type "AAA", but that doesn't mean it's now an insult, despite your compulsion to always use it as one. AAA isn't a genre, but you use the term in the same way I imagine you would describe seeing JRPG used. If I don't like Action RPGs, that doesn't suddenly make Action RPG an insult, either.

I still find it astonishing that we share such similar views of RPGs, yet you keep using that blasphemous term created by RPG-haters.
Is this somehow like gay people embracing the term "queer" as some sort of badge of honor?

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light Review comment
Before the Bravely Default demo, I'd have totally agreed. But after the demo, at least Square Enix seems capable of occasionally FINDING someone who can make a good JRPG.

You did a great job of making the game actually sound appealing during those early paragraphs before revealing the horrible monster beneath the surface.
Square-Enix just can't seem to get ANYTHING right anymore!
