HuniePop 2: Double Date

Double the Women but Only About Half the Fun

Back in 2015 Ryan Koons, under the company name HuniePot, successfully crowd-funded the original HuniePop. It combined match-3 puzzles, dating sim and spicy content that was the rare adult game that actually had some mainstream success. It helped that not only was the game fully-voiced but it had an actual story and character development. Koons went on to make HunieCam Studio and followed that up with HuniePop 2 in 2021 - which follows much in the same animation style as the first game, along with some more advanced match-3 gameplay while still being fully-voiced. That being said, despite the years between releases, this sequel somehow feels like a step back.

Looks and Stuff: As stated, the game takes its looks from the first entry and is just a bit more polished. In that department, the game does fine. All the characters have a variety of outfits for different dates, the match-3 aspect is as vibrant and challenging as ever and the resort setting makes for some attractive settings. While most of the characters are new, there are three returning characters from the first game: Kyu, the love fairy (Jaclyn Aimee - returning to the role), flight attendant Lola Rembrite (Kira Buckland - also returning) and adult film star and stunning MILF Jessie Maye (the only re-cast with Morgan Laure providing the voice). Also returning from the first game to voice different characters are Skyler Davenport and Sarah Wiedenheft. While the game doesn't have any issues I could find, one big difference is that there's just not as much content - aside from a brief introduction from Kyu (and Aimee is once again the standout) - most of the characters this time around, returning or not, just aren't as well developed and much more one-dimensional. And that's too bad, because these characters are a lot of fun from the Muslim airport worker with who is secretly a sexual deviant to the innocent resort receptionist who wants to explore her horizons and even - if you choose - the games first trans character - at least the game certainly gives you plenty of unique characters - they just don't feel as fleshed out. The music is still bubbly as ever as well.

Story: For those who didn't play the entirely niche first game - you start off as a hapless virgin who is picked by the Love Fairy Kyu to transform into a love machine and, by the end of the first game, that is what you are - having slept with multiple women. At the start of this game you have just proved your prowess once again by sleeping with a model (who shows up later) only for Kyu to interrupt and say that a once-in-lifetime event that could have catastrophic universe-ending consequences is approaching. The two goddesses known at the Nymphojinn are about to awaken due to a case of cosmic PMS and, if their nigh-insatiable lust cannot be satiated, well, everything will be destroyed. Kyu sees you as her greatest achievement and the best hope to stop the duo - but first you must prove that you can handle two women at once, thus your are sent to the tropical resort on the Inna De Poona to conquer the art of double dates - and outrageous threesomes to follow - in hopes you will be able to take on the Nymphojinn and save the universe from their destruction.

Gameplay: The game follows a similar pattern to the first entry but with some new twists. The match-3 puzzle returns but since you are double-dating, it adds in a stamina meter for each girl and if that falls to zero, you fail the date so switching between the girls is key. And stamina is consumed by the matches you make, so if you have a huge bonanza, you might accidentally ham-string yourself by using too much stamina in one move. But that's not the only thing to change. The biggest difference in the addition of baggage - that is, each of the women has their own set of baggage that they bring to the table and, once unlocked, will appear during dates. Baggage, as you know, is not good and it can range from negating the effect of certain items, to switching the effect of certain match-3 pieces (such as broken hearts netting a positive outcome while regular hearts do the opposite) to causing stamina issues. The stamina ones are the worst as Jessie (the MILF former adult star) has the baggage emphysema. On a double date when you switch between women, making a move causes the stamina to rise on the opposite woman's side but with emphysema there is a 20% for a move to result in NO stamina gain. Meaning if you're unlucky, you can easily run out of stamina on BOTH women, leading to an easy fail. While this adds plenty of new challenges - I also found it rather annoying and really wished for a no-baggage mode but, alas, nothing can be easy these days. At least they kept the after-date mini game easy and the rewards are twice as steamy.

Replay value: It's high, but only for those who like the challenges.

Final Verdict: While it looks just as good, the rest of the game is a letdown compared to the original.
