"Doom"

The latest incarnation of the legendary FPS is a return to its roots, employing the visuals of Doom 3 in the more arcade shoot 'em up style of the original. The result is partially successful, but because it lacks both the clever tricks and traps of the first game and the survival horror atmosphere of the third instalment I'd rather play either of those than this game. It suffers from the familiar feeling of being a multiplayer game at heart rather than a single player campaign; the maps feel like death match arenas linked together rather than a real environment to explore and the pick ups are either dropped by slain enemies or are scattered around like loot. Slightly disappointing as the previous games rank amongst my favourite ever games, but it's a solid enough shoot 'em up that unfortunately fails to reach the heady heights of its predecessors. But not much does, to be fair.
