"Descent"

Hybrid of a Doom-like FPS and a 3D space shooter, Descent takes the idea behind Id's seminal shooter and runs with it to glorious effect. Explore atmospherically lit and tortuous mazes of tunnels infested with robotic adversaries to find the reactor core, destroy it and escape before everything is blown to kingdom come. The tunnels look quite similar and the later, larger mazes can be a little difficult to interpret using the wireframe map meaning getting lost can become an issue, but it's a brilliant combination of exploration, puzzle solving and shooting that still stands up as one of my favourite Playstation games.
