Cthulhu Saves the World

Satisfy Your Old-School RPG Thirst
Nick - wrote on 08/11/19

Cthulhu Saves the World is an old-school throw-back turned-based parody RPG done right.

Cthulhu loses his devastating powers and must become a true hero to get them back. Cthulhu sets out on an adventure to figure out how to get them back. He'll team up with several great characters, including a living sword, cat, and a dragon. Will he destroy the world when he regains his power?

Presentation
Cthulhu Saves the World is an intentional throw-back RPG, utilizing sprites and turned-based battles, which is all probably closest to an 8-bit Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest) style. It stays true to the style we know and love.

Gameplay
There are several great features that makes for great game play.

Sprint mode - no need to walk around the world agonizingly slow. I used sprint mode the entire time.

Comb attack system - as you battle, build up your combos to do more and more damage, just beware of certain spells and abilities that will cancel your combo.

HP replenishing - no need to go back to town to sleep at the inn every 10 minutes. Your HP will replenish after completing each battle, but your MP will not.

Swappable party characters - getting bored of your party? In a dungeon where you need different spells or abilities? Change your party freely, discovering new characters as your progress through the game.

Battle limits in dungeons - Sick of random encounters in dungeons? Purge the dungeon so you actually walk around, search, and find everything. Still need XP? Turn random encounters back on and fight some more.

Originality
Turn-based RPGs are nothing new, but they way they combined features makes this game very enjoyable, and an excellent throw-back game turned slightly modern. Sprint mode, combo attack system, replenish HP after every battle, swappable characters in your party, dungeon battle purging, simplistic parody story, all comes together for a great game.

Replay Value
Even though there are some other modes you can play, I'd say there really isn't much replay value for this game.

Recommendation
If you like your old school RPGs, play this game! If you are getting sick of rom randomizers of your favorite old school RPGs, this can quench your thirst.
