Might ACTUALLY be that good...

Finally. This is the Halo we'd been waiting for.
This game is literally a math problem:
Good parts of Halo: Combat Evolved + good parts of Halo 2 = Halo 3.
Taking a good story from the first game, combine it with improved level design from Halo 2 and tie it all up with the series standards of polished graphics, action, and multiplayer; now you've got yourself a game for the ages, and a respectable "end" to the story (ignoring the upcoming Halo 4).
Added elements include new items like a bubble shield or EMP that can play a role in surviving a battle, but really don't make or break anything (personally, I hardly use them). FINALLY, co-op play over Xbox Live has been added, as well as 4-player co-op. Recording and sharing of replays from story mode or multiplayer makes for a great way to relive your finest moments. And lastly, the Forge is a great (and fairly ambitious for a console FPS) tool to let you really customize and get creative with your multiplayer.
All in all... the biggest change from other games in the series is that Bungie finally figured out how to stop getting in their own way.
