Backlog: The Embiggening – April 1, 2018

Oh, boy! April’s here, and that means the loveable professionals of the AAA videogame industry and the scrappy homebrewers of the Indie development scene are ready to give us tons more awesome games to play! Let’s take a look at how fun and exciting this month will be. I can hardly wait!

We all love the biggest corporations because they are the best. They have the best IP and they’re not afraid to use it. This month, we’re getting an awesome Action/Adventure based on the beautifully drawn and incredibly animated ‘Adventure Time’ TV show! WOW! The Switch is also getting ports of the WiiU’s “Hello Kitty Kruisers” Kart racing phenomenon and the culturally relevant (and also beautifully animated) JRPG, “South Park: The Fractured, But Whole,” so folks who missed out on these gems the first time have a chance to buy them again. YAY!

Indie devs are still using their loving attention to detail to bring versions of some of their best games to the Switch at a totally fair price – and on awesome physical media that will never become obsolete! These games include “Shantae: Half-Genie Hero,” “Max: The Curse of Brotherhood,” and “Darkest Dungeon” (which is also coming to PlayStation 4). The PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One will also get a compilation of fantastic Rogue-lites in the ‘Don’t Starve’ series. WOOHOO!

Of course, the game everyone will be talking about in April is “Extinction,” an incredible WRPG multiplatform release that looks to redefine the depth of videogame narratives and put a coat of spit and polish on that will blow our minds. Move over, Geralt of Rivia~! HA!

Those who only own one platform needn’t worry, though, as there are plenty of superb exclusives coming that will blow our minds. There just won’t be enough time in the month to play all these great experiences! PC is getting “Frost Punk,” a traditional management Simulation in a frozen post apocalypse. Sony has a bunch of cool things lined up, with the new Norse-themed “God of War” leading the way, followed by Mafia Sandbox, “Yakuza 6.” PS4 and Vita will share the fast-paced SHMUP sequel featuring adorable schoolgirls, “Gal*Gun 2,” while the Vita will maintain exclusivity on a gripping new Visual Novel, “Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly.” Nintendo’s Switch is getting exclusive access to “Penny-Punching Princess,” a guaranteed classic JRPG in the making from JRPG powerhouse, NIS, as well as the launch of Nintendo’s own ingenious first-party peripheral system, “Nintendo Labo,” which will provide kids and adults alike with hours of entertainment building things out of cardboard, then sticking their Switch inside said handicrafts. NEATO!

PlayStation VR owners can look forward to joining PC VR owners in the transcendental “Rick and Morty Simulator: Virtual Rick-Ality,” based on the stimulating and thought provoking Cartoon Network show of the same name. Man, I’m gonna have to get a MS Hololens so I can get in on these can’t-miss experiences! ZOWEE!

Man, there are just too many good games coming out in April! I want to play all of them, and so should you!
