I can't be definite, but I'm pretty sure this was the first tactical RPG I played. It's called tactical for a reason - if you don't watch it, it can get very frustrating, it's incredibly easy for characters - or even weapons and armor - to go away forever. This is one you better save often and expect to retry battles. Yet it's also very rewarding.

Fantastic Tactical-RPG

Perhaps the best tactical-RPG I've ever played for a console system. Vast array of armor and weapons, many secret weapons.. Immense possible character customization. And the tactical system allows far more strategic gameplay than in most RPGS (where much of the point can be level grinding). However, instead of level grinding, the Achilles heal of this game is saving and restarting (to prevent lost armor).
