A Breath of Fresh Adventure

Breath of the Wild deviates from the traditional Zelda formula and storytelling. Set in the new expansive kingdom of Hyrule, Link awakens from a century-long slumber and needs to recover his memories and slowly discovers he needs to defeat the menacing Calamity Ganon and save Hyrule. The story unfolds gradually and non-linearly, allowing players to uncover the mysteries of the world at their own pace. The non-linear approach to storytelling is a departure from the series' conventions, but does allow the player to explore, unlock memories of the past, and discover and unlock the mysteries of Hyrule's looming fate. Not all the main story quests are required to be completed, but you do paint a more complete picture and get full enjoyment of the game if you complete them …

The Legendary Breath of the Wild

The 2017 release of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (BOTW) came with much fanfare and anticipation. It debuted on both the Nintendo Switch and the dying Wii U. Since its inception it has become one of the best-selling games of all time, currently sitting at 29.5 million copies sold (according to the list on Wikipedia). This open world action-adventure game promised much to fans, and it does not, for the most part, disappoint.

The primary plot of BOTW involves Link awakening after 100 years to world threatened by Calamity Ganon. After decades of other videogame development outfits ripping off all of Nintendo’s original, often genre-defining ideas, it’s Nintendo’s turn to do the copying. Thanks to resurgent Western – specifically PC – game development over the course of the last decade, mainstream gamers have come to expect certain things from their Action/Adventure titles thanks to the likes of Ubisoft and Bethesda Softworks… things that traditional ‘Legend of Zelda’ games didn’t deliver.
