One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

After being pleasantly surprised by the excellence of “Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing,” and being a fan of the love-it-or-hate-it “Sonic R,” I have come to strongly appreciate Sega’s attempts in the kart racing genre. With a shiny new WiiU and very few appealing games available on the thing, the WiiU version of “Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed” (“SART”), called the ‘Bonus Edition’ due to its inclusion of Metal Sonic and an extra racetrack, seemed like a no-brainer, especially because Sega decided to sell this game for a MSRP of $40, a third less than what most WiiU games go for.

The Power of Transformation

Good kart racing games have been hard to come by recently. In fact, the last Sonic & All Stars Game was probably one of the better ones to come out in quite awhile. How then does this sequel stand up to the original? While I can't say it tops the original, it provides just as much fun (and a bit of frustration) as the first game. Throw a few friends in the mix and you have another fun racing game.
Presentation: Like NSMBU the graphics, even though they are updated for HD systems, don't exactly scream amazing quality. There are jaggies and clipping to be found throughout, though the tracks and characters look pretty good on screen. Once again, this is a very colorful game and the tracks take you from classic Sonic to Golden Axe, Panzer Dragoon, NIGHTs, Skies of Arcadia and Billy …
