A scant two years after “Mass Effect 2” first hit PC and Xbox consoles, the third and final part of the trilogy that first hit planning stages nearly a decade prior came to light. “Mass Effect 3” is the first game in the series to release simultaneously on all three major platforms, and is also the first (and only) entry in the series to receive a release on a Nintendo platform, though the WiiU port was delayed by a few months.
The developer, BioWare, had gone through many trials and tribulations by this point, both having been devoured by EA and put to work in the Big Three member’s salt mines, and having built-up unsustainable levels of hype and adulation from the ‘Mass Effect’ fan-base. When a series (be it movie, book, video game, etc...) arrives at its conclusion, the creators often try and make the final chapter of the story a combination of elements from previous chapters. Old friends (or foes) return. Familiar locations may be revisited. The story may find a way to return to a familiar location.
Mass Effect 3 is no different. This game truly is a combination of the previous two, both in terms of the story and in terms of gameplay. Not only will you get a chance to tie up loose ends across the galaxy, but the gameplay manages to strike a better balance between action and RPG than Mass Effect 2 while also striking a more slim figure than the occasionally bloated original Mass Effect game.
