"Dead Island"

The Elder Scrolls meets Resident Evil in this sandbox RPG set during a zombie apocalypse on a tropical island. It's a well engineered game with plenty to do, but like a lot of games of this type there's little more to it than blowing away zombies and looting the environment for useful items. The narrative thread running through it isn't really strong enough and the copious number of side missions can often fall by the wayside by sheer weight of numbers. It also has the deeply irritating "respawn when you die" formula which means that when you meet a particularly tough enemy or get low on ammo you just have to keep getting killed, trudge your way back from the respawn point and get killed again over and over, until you beat them through sheer attrition which can get pretty tedious. So I Herd You Liek Zombiez

Dead Island is a game for people who like to kill zombies, plain and simple. Because in Dead Island, there are a lot of ways to kill the living dead - bashing their skulls in, decapitating head and chopping off limbs, burning, electrocuting and poisoning them - and, of course, simply blowing them away with a gun.

The story is pretty simple - you're on an island paradise resort that transforms into a nightmare when a zombie outbreak occurs. Your character happens to be immune to the virus, so that means you can get bit and not change into a slavering undead monster. You can still die, of course, but you can take comfort knowing you won't come back again.

You can choose to help various pockets of survivors along the way - everything from retrieving a lost necklace to putting one …

Eh - I got what I wanted out of it. If I waited until now to buy, it would probably be another year until I actually got around to playing it. There's already a Dead Island 2 announced - I'll wait on the GotY edition of that game and save money.

This applies to pretty much ANY game released this-gen. I think it's because there's so much crap and it's all so similar that modern games don't have any staying power. And if they WOULD have staying power, the built-in obsolescence of annual sequels destroys it.It seems like every game except first-party Nintendo titles loses all its value after a year.

For anyone who bought this game when it first came out, you should have waited.  Best Buy has the game of the year edition on sale for Black Friday for only $7.99!
