The Most Popular Buggy Game You Can Buy

Nick - wrote on 05/30/2013

Story:
A trip to the planet Pandora turns into a mission to locate an alien vault possibly containing treasures. Coming across tape recordings that yields more clues to the vault, the Borderlands characters venture forward because they have apparently nothing better to do. The story is pretty vague, and there was probably a lot more to it than I can remember, but due to endless side quests where many have nothing to do with the main story line, one can easily understand forgetting what this game is all about.

Presentation:
This game is built using the Unreal Engine, and a very simplistic use of it. Graphical assets are all very similar, offering very little change from area to area. Many of the graphics are quite grainy and pixelated up close, and are reused throughout the game. …

17 Million Useless Guns

“Borderlands,” indeed ANY FPS, is not a game that I typically give a second glance, thanks to the fact that most of them are so similar that even their screen shots tend to blur together into a nightmare of brown and gray environments populated by huge, burly dude-men shooting each other. Having already played the non-DLC-enhanced PlayStation 3 version of the game, fellow MeltedJoystick staffer Chris assured the rest of the MeltedJoystick crew that “Borderlands” is the best FPS of the 7th Generation and that the recently-released sequel, “Borderlands 2,” would be a perfect co-op game for us to play during our weekly sessions. Between Chris and several other friends salivating over the sequel, I decided that a Steam sale during which a 4-pack of the Game of the Year Edition of …

Although I have previously experienced this (mostly single-player) on PS3 - I re-visited this on Steam and it gave me a chance to re-examine things from a different perspective, as well as play the full DLC and play online with other people as well. It exposed both the best and worst the game had to offer and I still thing the overall experience is excellent - though it's not perfect by far. When it comes down to it, a game billed as the one with a bazillion guns gives you a fun FPS experience with plenty of replayability.

Presentation:

Gearbox decided to go with a more cartoon-like look rather than the super realistic look of say a Call of Duty or Halo games. I think this style suits the game well, as the detail is still there. The biggest flaw is that the game relies too much on …

I want your money... not your life.

Bill Cosby once said “I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.” I guess he said that. I’m not like, the president of his fan club or something. We’ve all heard variations of that before, the most common usually revolves around warning that if you try and please everyone, you’ll end up pleasing no one.

It’s a pretty good motto to follow, especially if you’re a person that makes some sort of media. We all can remember books or movies or video games that try to do too many things at once, lose their focus, no single aspect of the project is ever done “well”, and the entire product suffers because everyone is in over their head.

So when someone came up with the idea for Borderlands as an RPG-FPS hybrid (what the …
