“To the Moon” is an Indie Adventure game created by Freebird Games, a small Canadian development team lead by Kan Gao (who also did most of the work on the game). Unlike most startup Indie developers, Gao and Freebird had been working on their particular breed of game design for 4 years before releasing “To the Moon” in 2011, releasing 3 other titles before finally entering the public zeitgeist with their fourth. 2011 was right around the time my eyes were opened to the new vision of PC gaming brought on by the client-driven ecosystems of Steam and GOG. It was likewise around the time when I discovered that the Indie games movement was injecting a much-needed dose of fresh blood into a Games Industry that had been stagnating under the yolk of “AAA” publishers for the better …

A Moving Journey Through the Mind and Soul

To the Moon manages something in four hours that is hard to achieve in any medium - be it games, movies or books - and that is reach an emotional level that is both deep and one that you can relate to. The game is billed as a "story-driven experience" and that about sums things up - there aren''t any monsters to fight, no guns to shoot nor dungeons to crawl. But the impact from this game will stay with you a long time - as simple as it is, it's the most I've felt from a game since Telltale's excellent edition to The Walking Dead. The game doesn't take much time - but don't let that fool you - it's importance can't be measured that way.
