"Soul Calibur V"

Yet another iteration of a franchise that 's content to merely bolt on more embellishments and largely needless bells and whistles rather than do anything different or new with the idea. It's undeniably a great looking and enjoyable fighting game but if you own any of the others since the second instalment, it's not really worth adding this to your collection too.

I've always been a fan of the SoulCalibur series for one reason - it really caters to the button-masher who can't be bothered with silly things like learning combos, defending or strategy. And SoulCalibur is really good at letting you release that inner button masher (especially whatever character happens to have a long stick to smack you with). I want to have fun with my fighting game - and while the AI stills gets off way too cheap combos (especially at higher difficulties), overall this series remains a fun diversion - but I feel bad for whoever paid full price when it was releases as it suffers from a major case of redundancy.
Presentation: Graphics-wise, the game has still got it. While I haven't had the chance to play many fighting games this generation, I have to think that …

The Legend Will Never Die… But Maybe it Should

“SouCalibur 5” (“SC5”) is the second game in the series to appear on both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. Usually, when it comes to fighting game franchises, one per hardware generation is good enough, unless the developer is pulling a Capcom and releasing a ‘turbo’ or ‘super’ version of a game to squeeze a bit more blood out of the stone that is their target audience. Yet ‘SoulCalibur’ managed to defy this convention in the 6th Generation by releasing “SoulCalibur 2” as a multi-platform game with exclusive characters on each console and “SoulCalibur 3” as a PlayStation 2 exclusive with a great character creator and heaps of single-player content.
