Nintendo Shouldn't Have Put "New" in the Title

New Super Mario Bros. U is a solid side scrolling Mario platformer but is far too similar to the Wii version to make it stand out amongst the rest of the series.

At the core NSMBU is pretty much exactly the same as the original on the Wii. You play as Mario and can add up to 3 friends to jump with you through the stages. In each stage there are 3 big coins to collect. This in no way is necessary to beat the game but instead is incentive to check every nook and cranny in each level. There are the familiar power ups like mushrooms, fireball and iceball upgrades, mini-Mario, and Yoshi. Instead of the helicopter power-up in the Wii version, there's a squirrel power-up. It too is pretty much exactly the same as the original except you can grasp onto walls to save yourself.

Boilerplate From The Wii

Story:
Anyone expecting a new, interesting story with a plot twist will be very disappointed. This is the classic story, Bowser kidnaps the princess, and Mario and Luigi have to go through 8 worlds to save her. Sticking to roots is good, but come on, Nintendo could add something interesting.

Presentation:
The graphics look identical to the Wii version, the quality is a bit better since the Wii U is 1080P. But this game definitely used the same graphics as the Wii version, so Nintendo could easily spit out this new game for the Wii U. With that in mind, why didn't they spit this out for the Wii, and have third one for the Wii U? Reusing the graphics and gaming engine should make it really simple to spit out these game much faster than Nintendo does in reality. With that said, …

Isn’t This a Little Formulaic?

I was one of the happiest people in the gaming world when Nintendo announced “New Super Mario Bros. Wii” (“NSMBW”) as the first 2D, non-handheld ‘Mario’ game since “Super Mario World.” I never got into the whole 3D gimmick introduced by “Super Mario 64,” and the return of the world’s premier 2D platformer was certainly something to get excited about. That was in 2009. In 2012, Nintendo gave us yet another ‘New Super Mario’ game in the form of “New Super Mario Bros. U” (“NSMBU”). But without the epic wait between titles, would this latest entry taste as sweet? And without time to work on the mechanics, could Nintendo produce something to improve upon its predecessor?

Not So Much New, but Still Quite Fun

I admit I wasn't as excited about New Super Mario Bros. as many people. I found it fun, but I hardly ever played it on my own. New Super Mario Bros. U follows much in the same footsteps, though playing it with friends was a lot more fun (and at times quite a bit more challenging) than I would have expected. So if you're a die hard Mario fan, or just want a game to pick and play with friends or family, this is probably a good choice for you.

Presentation: Although built for next generation graphics, NSMBU still shares that Mario throwback look. No 3D here - it's traditional 2D fun - colorful, vibrant, somewhat cartoonish - but classic Mario. Classic enemies return, the four-player action (and one extra for the game pad) returns and locations - fire, ice, forest, swamp - are all present …
