Review Round-Up: Fall 2023

By Nelson Schneider - 12/02/23 at 01:40 PM CT

Welcome back to another installment of the MeltedJoystick Review Round-Up. Here’s what our staff has reviewed since last time:

Nelson’s Reviews:
Fall was not a particularly exciting quarter for me. I got into a rut of playing through a bunch of short, unspectacular Indie games that mostly just made me want to play more “Warframe” instead (as if I need to play more “Warframe”). At least “Turnip Boy” surprised me with how fun, funny, and generally well-made it is for what is essentially a joke game.

Greak: Memories of Azure” – 3.5/5
Aeon of Sands: The Trail” – 2.5/5
Streets of Kamurocho” – 2.5/5
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries” – 4/5
World to the West” – 4/5
Rayon Riddles: Rise of the Goblin King” – 0.5/5
Seasons After Fall” – 3/5
Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion” – 4.5/5

Chris’ Reviews:
Oh, that Christopher! He’s still been playing way too many games at the same time and then forgetting to review them. At least he managed to get two games done and dusted, along with a somewhat-late review of a coop game we played over the Summer.

Dead Island 2” – 3.5/5
Riverbond” – 3.5/5
Alan Wake” – 4/5

Nick’s Reviews Procrastination:
Lightning has finally given up on “Destiny 2” and joined the rest of the MJ Crew in disdain for the once-great Live Service that has grown perpetually worse over the last few years. He even took delight in regaling the rest of us with data about how the “Season of the Wish” launched with the lowest player count in franchise history.

That’s great! But did NOT playing “Destiny 2” like a second job actually improve Nick’s productivity regarding other games and reviews? Nope! He’s been frantically trying to squeeze in more “Break of the Weapons” screen time in order to finish that monster Sandbox by the end of the year (only 30 days left!). And he still needs to corral Chris into another coop session so they can complete “A Hat in Time.” It’s going to be a trick for someone planning a two-week European vacation in the middle of the only remaining month to get things done!

Featured User Review:
Megadrive has been revisiting the original PlayStation era this quarter, bringing us several of his short-but-punchy pronunciations upon games of that era. His review of “Castlevania: Symphony of the Night” stands out as the best of the bunch, encapsulating quite a bit of ‘Castlevania’ history in a single pithy paragraph. Keep ‘em coming!
